Ms. Myra Griffin: I’m Ronn Thomas, 4th Past National President of Groove Phi Groove Social Fellowship, Inc. Our organization has chapters throughout the United States, Ghana, Africa and London, England. Many of these chapters hold tri-annual social events. We’ll be in Houston this weekend meeting and celebrating our existence and Martin Luther King, Jr.’s birth.
Born at Morgan State College (now University) in 1962, we have grown into a Fellowship-ing, community service organization. As an employee of the Fort Lauderdale Westside Gazette from 1974 – 80, I’ve continued to follow NNPA newspapers nationwide. Especially a month prior tovisiting an NNPA city. Your articles on Reagan Flowers, her CStem program and the D.A.W.N. program at the Third Ward Multi-Services Center excited me. My good friend Sharon Chandler, 7th Past National President of Swing Phi Swing Social Fellowship, Inc., (founded at Winston-Salem State University in 1969) have developed a way to challenge our chapters in the cities we visit. We make a contribution to a given organization, introduce this group to our brothers and sisters locally and challenge them to take on this cause. Simple! Houston is our first city this year. By the way, my maternal great-grandmother was a Griffin, from Middlesex County, Virginia. Sharon and I hope that we can visit CStem and the Multi-Services Center when we visit Houston on January 17 – 20th. Normally we spend Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service in our home areas of Maryland (for Sharon) and Philadelphia (for me). As an African American Civil War historian, I’m honored to be in the Houston/ Galveston area.
